So, I recently had the chance to explore Greece for the first time, and wow, it was nothing short of magical! My partner and I hopped on the Ibiscus Ferry from Fetiyhe, Turkey, and in just under two hours, we found ourselves stepping onto the beautiful island of Rhodes. Can you imagine the thrill of sailing into an ancient port surrounded by history? I was totally captivated! 🚢💖

Rhodes: A Living Museum

We stayed at this charming boutique hotel right in the Old Town of Rhodes, nestled within ancient city walls. Talk about a location! From the harbor, we could stroll to one of the historic city gates leading to our hotel. As soon as we stepped through the gate, it felt like entering a different era—no cars, just quaint cobbled streets buzzing with life. Seriously, it was like walking through a living museum. 🏛️✨

As a history lover (and even if you’re not!), Rhodes is a feast for the eyes and soul. The Street of the Knights, stretching 600 meters, is lined with inns that once housed the Knights of St. John Hospitaller. Imagine the stories these walls could tell! The Knights took over in 1309, transforming the island into their administrative hub, and as I walked down this street, I felt echoes of the past whispering all around me.

Now, let’s talk about the Palace of the Grand Master. This place is absolutely grand! With 154 rooms showcasing incredible antiquities, it’s like stepping into a storybook. The frescoes by renowned artists and stunning mosaics had me in awe. And for just 10 Euros, you can snag a combo ticket for both the Palace and the Archaeological Museum, which is totally worth it—the artifacts are simply phenomenal!

The Rich History of Rhodes

Did you know that Rhodes has been fortified since 305 BC? The Greeks and Romans added their own twist to the city’s defenses before the Knights Hospitaller enhanced it further with forts and moats. Walking through the ancient city walls, I could visualize the countless battles fought here. It’s fascinating! And let’s not forget the Colossus of Rhodes—a giant statue that once stood proudly at the harbor and was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. What a sight that must have been! 🌅

The harbor is still dotted with ancient windmills, once used as lookout towers and grain grinders. It’s such a vibrant and bustling place, especially when cruise ships come in. Pro tip: If you want to escape the crowds, just wander a block or two away from the main tourist spots. You’ll discover charming alleys and local eateries that offer a taste of authentic Rhodes.

Lindos: The Picturesque Escape

After soaking up the history in Rhodes, we made our way to Lindos, known for its stunning beaches and the ancient acropolis. The streets here are a maze of charming cobblestone paths and whitewashed buildings that are just begging for a photo op! 📸💕 But fair warning: it can get crowded during the day when the cruise ship tourists flood in. We decided to stay for four nights and found a cozy hotel with breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and the Acropolis perched on the hill. Dreamy, right?

Climbing up to the Acropolis was a highlight! Standing at 116 meters above sea level, it’s a sight to behold. The temple dedicated to Athena Lindia and the stunning portico are remnants of a time long past, and I felt so lucky to experience it. We went early to avoid the heat and crowds, and trust me, it was worth it! Who else thinks exploring ancient ruins should be on everyone’s bucket list? 🙋‍♀️✨

As we wandered through Lindos, we discovered not just the stunning architecture but also the rich stories of the past. The Knights of St. John had a presence here too, and exploring the ruins, including the Byzantine chapel of St. John, made me appreciate the island’s deep history even more. I can’t wait to share more about my travels and adventures, and I’m already dreaming about my next destination—Karpathos!
