Growing up, Chase Sui Wonders was the quintessential scaredy-cat when it came to horror films. Can you relate? 😱 She recalls how she would dodge slasher flicks at all costs during sleepovers, making a quick exit whenever the tension ramped up. Fast forward to today, and she’s not only starred in horror comedies but is also gearing up for a lead role in the reboot of a classic horror flick. Talk about a glow-up! 🌟

From Avoiding Horror to Embracing It

In 2022, Chase made her debut in the horror-comedy film Bodies Bodies Bodies, which marked a pivotal moment in her relationship with the genre. “I saw how the sausage was made,” she says, and suddenly, horror lost its grip on her fears. Now, she’s all about those creepy vibes! 🎃 With her next project, I Know What You Did Last Summer, set to drop on July 18, she’s fully immersed in the world that once sent chills down her spine.

Even though she didn’t catch the original 1997 film as a child, she idolized its stars. Who didn’t love Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. back in the day? 🥰 Chase reminisces about watching Hewitt’s Heartbreakers on repeat and how she felt like a kid again when she met them on set. “They were so welcoming,” she beams, and it’s clear that this experience is a dream come true for her.

The Journey to Finding Her Voice

Chase’s path to stardom wasn’t all smooth sailing. She initially entered Harvard with dreams of studying astrophysics. Can you imagine? But after realizing that wasn’t her calling, she pivoted to film studies. “I was failing,” she admits, but it ultimately led her to write for The Harvard Lampoon and discover her true passion. 🎬

Landing a role in HBO Max’s Generation was a game-changer. She didn’t just find her footing; she sprinted toward success with projects like Bodies Bodies Bodies. This film was her breakout, and she shared the screen with a talented cast that included Amandla Stenberg and Maria Bakalova. “I’m very much a believer in momentum,” she explains, emphasizing how being on set fuels her confidence for the next role.

Navigating Hollywood as a Mixed Ethnicity Actor

As a biracial actress, Chase has faced her share of challenges in Hollywood. “It always felt like roles were written for someone else,” she reflects, highlighting the struggle for representation. However, she’s optimistic about the changes she sees in the industry. The role in The Studio was not originally intended for a mixed-ethnicity actress, but once she was cast, the script adapted to include more diverse jokes and scenarios. Isn’t that refreshing? 🌈

She’s excited to play an all-American girl in I Know What You Did Last Summer, feeling proud to step into a leading role that’s not often given to someone who looks like her. “It felt exciting to give her some unique flair,” she says. It’s a step forward for representation, and she’s here for it!

As Chase continues to embrace her unique identity, she’s also exploring her ambitions behind the camera. She recently co-created a short film and hopes to collaborate with her filmmaker sister soon. With her talent and drive, the future looks bright. “It feels like the world has opened up to me as I’ve opened up to myself,” she concludes.
