The holiday season is a time for connection and celebration. This year, Christmas was celebrated in Brooklyn, marked by warmth and laughter. From lighting candles to enjoying festive meals, every moment was a testament to joy and togetherness.
Family gatherings and festive lights
The holiday festivities began with a visit to the renowned Dyker Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn, where the streets transform into a dazzling display of lights and decorations. Families sell steaming hot cocoa from their garages, while classic holiday tunes create an enchanting atmosphere throughout the neighborhood.
Welcoming relatives from afar
When relatives from England arrived, excitement filled the air. It was a delightful surprise to see my cousin Jimmy and my son Anton dressed alike, symbolizing family unity. Meanwhile, my aunt Lulu prepared a comforting pot of carrot soup, evoking a sense of home. These rituals remind us that some traditions endure, regardless of the passage of time.
Exploring Brooklyn and creating memories
During our stay, we enjoyed leisurely walks along the Brooklyn Promenade, taking in stunning views of Manhattan. A visit to Jane’s Carousel and ice skating added to the winter spirit. The views from The Edge in Manhattan provided a breathtaking perspective of the city’s skyline, enhancing our experience of the crisp winter air.
Christmas Eve traditions
On Christmas Eve, we attended a church service that immersed us in the holiday spirit. This was followed by a cheese tasting, with each selection sparking laughter and conversation. The next morning, the boys excitedly opened their stockings. My son Anton’s gifts were particularly amusing, showcasing his transition into adolescence. Among his treasures were a scented pen, a reminder of his childhood, and pimple patches, indicative of his teenage years.
Sharing joy with friends and family
Christmas Day featured a lively gathering, with children buzzing from the excitement. Having friends over helped channel that energy into shared joy. This year, I discovered a newfound enjoyment in cooking, highlighted by a simple yet delightful cheesy beans recipe, enhanced with crunchy onions and a kick of crushed red pepper.
A trip to San Francisco
After the holiday celebrations, my father and I traveled to San Francisco to visit my sister and her family. We were fortunate to stay at my friend Lena’s beautiful home while she was away. This arrangement allows for a home swap in the summer, fostering shared experiences. Lena shared an inspiring story of her son Eli’s early handwriting efforts, which evolved into a beautiful piece of art now framed in her living room.
Honoring loved ones and reflecting on the year
As the year closed, we honored my late partner Paul on New Year’s Eve. We poured Champagne in remembrance, while the children toasted with sparkling Martinelli’s, blending joy with nostalgia. This moment served as a poignant reminder of the love that connects us, both past and present.
As we move into the new year, I hope everyone had a restful and rejuvenating break. Life presents challenges, and it is vital to acknowledge that everyone faces their struggles. I extend my best wishes to all as we look forward to a wonderful year together.
P.S. I encourage you to share your joyful moments and reflect on what you are grateful for, regardless of how small. It is the thought and connection that truly matter.
