As a self-proclaimed lipstick minimalist, my makeup bag has always been a haven for low-maintenance lip products. I’ve been a firm believer in the ‘less is more’ approach, favoring smudged liners and shiny tops over anything too matte or meticulously drawn. So, when MAED launched its Duet Lip Liners I was initially skeptical. The double-ended wooden pencils pair a deeper matte shade with a creamier satin one, designed to be layered for a more defined, dimensional lip. But, given MAED’s reputation for exceptional lip care products, I was intrigued enough to give it a try.
Founded by Denise Vasi MAED is a brand that has always focused exclusively on lip care, from exfoliating treatments and serums to lipsticks and balms. The Duet Lip Liners are the latest addition to their lineup, offering a unique way to define and fill in your lips without switching between products. Each pencil comes with two complementary shades and textures: Contour a deeper matte shade for clean lines, and Cushion a softer, creamier satin texture for easy blending. MAED recommends starting with Contour around the edges and then using Cushion to soften the transition and create more dimension.
First Impressions: The Power of Pigment
The first thing that struck me about the MAED Duet Lip Liners was the impressive pigment payoff. Every shade, even the lighter ones, was surprisingly vibrant with just a single swipe. The formulas are creamy and blendable, gliding across the lips without any tugging. Despite my initial reservations about the classic wooden pencil format, the Duet Liners proved to be sturdy and long-lasting. They sharpened cleanly back to a point without any issues, even after some heavy-handed application.
I’ve been experimenting with wearing both sides together, starting with Contour around the perimeter and then using Cushion just below it to create a soft gradient. This technique adds dimension, making the lips look fuller without an obvious overline. The finishes strike a nice balance, with the matte Contour side never making my lips feel tight or dry, and the satin Cushion side looking creamy without emphasizing lip lines. While neither formula is overly moisturizing on its own, I found that adding a gloss on top enhanced the shine without causing the product underneath to slide around.
The Shade Range: Thoughtfully Edited and Versatile
The Duet Lip Liners come in four color pairings, covering a wide range of neutrals. From cool dusty rose with apricot nude to deep berry brown with rosewood nude, each duo is distinct and versatile. The matte formula promises long-wearing, transfer-resistant color, and true to MAED’s ethos, there’s a lip care element built in. Both the Contour and Cushion sides contain MAED’s BioActive Complex which blends collagen peptides, ceramides, and plant stem cells to keep lips from feeling dry throughout the day.
My personal favorite is the shade Bound which gives me the brown-toned ’90s lip that’s been trending lately. The Duet Liners have officially made me reconsider my anti-wooden-pencil stance. The pigment is impressive, the matte and satin formulas are both comfortable to wear and easy to blend, and having two shades in one pencil is a game-changer for simplifying my makeup routine.
The Verdict: A Lip Makeup Revolution
At $28, the MAED Duet Lip Liners are a worthwhile investment, considering you’re essentially getting two lip liners in one with the shade matching already done for you. The Duet Liners have proven to be a versatile and high-quality addition to my makeup bag. While they may not be totally smudge-proof, they stay surprisingly intact throughout the day, even with eating and drinking. If you’re usually reaching for two to three pencils every time you do your lip combo, this feels like an easy way to simplify things. Consider me sold.
