Discover Vietnam’s Hidden Gems and Unique Experiences

discover vietnams hidden gems and unique experiences 1765828197

Stepping onto the bustling streets of Hanoi presents an experience like no other. Imagine sitting on a tiny red plastic stool, savoring a refreshing Tiger beer while indulging in a bowl of steaming pho. In that moment, you realize you have arrived in a place filled with life and warmth. Each visit to Vietnam unveils a new layer of its charm, making it feel like a well-kept secret waiting to be explored.

Having traveled to Vietnam multiple times, with another journey anticipated this winter, I can attest that this beautiful country offers the allure and excitement of a premier destination at a fraction of the cost. If you have not considered Vietnam for your next getaway, let me share why it is a treasure trove of inspiration, adventure, and welcoming hospitality.

The heart of Vietnam: its people

Throughout my travels across more than 40 countries, the Vietnamese people have stood out as some of the most generous and kind-hearted individuals I have encountered. From a family in the mountains preparing French fries for us to local vendors treating us like honored guests, their warmth is palpable. The Vietnamese spirit is rooted in community and connection, making every interaction meaningful.

Language and welcoming nature

Fortunately, English is commonly spoken in urban areas and tourist destinations, facilitating navigation. Learning a few basic Vietnamese phrases like “hello,” “thank you,” and “how much?” can foster connections and respect with locals. My partner Mark has picked up enough of the language to elicit smiles and even secure complimentary food and room upgrades during our stays.

Despite the historical backdrop of the American War, we have consistently felt warmly welcomed as Americans. I recall a memorable moment while cycling through a rural village where children gleefully shouted, “Obama! Obama!” as they waved at us, showcasing the open-heartedness that defines the Vietnamese people.

Natural wonders and cultural riches

One of my most cherished experiences was a 27-mile guided trek through the breathtaking rice terraces of Sapa. Our guide, Mrs. Co, an expert in traditional medicine, shared her knowledge of both healing herbs and toxic plants as we journeyed through lush, emerald mountains. Staying with local families who prepared delicious meals from scratch provided us with a sense of authenticity and humility. The stunning views of water buffalo against the backdrop of towering mountains made our return to the hotel, aptly named The Stunning View, all the more special. The memories of sipping $1 beers on the terrace while soaking in the scenery still linger.

Beach bliss and historical cities

When it comes to relaxation, Ang Bang Beach is a personal favorite. With its soft, clean sand, gentle waves, and beachside cafés serving mouthwatering grilled fish and banh xeo (Vietnamese pancakes), it is the ideal spot to unwind. The beach’s crystal-clear turquoise waters invite long walks, and we plan to stay in a charming bungalow just steps from the shore, complete with daily Vietnamese breakfasts and coconut coffee—all for about $35.

Just a short distance away lies Hoi An, an ancient city illuminated by enchanting lanterns and steeped in rich cultural history. Our stay at the Vinh Hung Library Hotel featured beautiful wooden furnishings, a tranquil pool, and exceptional service for just $32 a night. Bicycles are available for rent at around $1 per day, allowing us to explore picturesque rice paddies and hidden backroads at our leisure.

Adventurous escapes and culinary delights

Phu Quoc Island, often referred to as the Hawaii of the East, boasts pristine beaches, delectable seafood, and a serene atmosphere. Here, you can engage in activities like biking, hiking, or simply lounging under palm trees. We rented motorbikes to explore caves left over from the war, which were fascinating to discover.

Another must-visit is Halong Bay, known for its stunning limestone karsts. We chartered a small boat for two days, where we enjoyed swimming, kayaking, and indulging in homemade meals, culminating in a night spent under a blanket of stars, cradled by the gentle waves. This magical experience remains one of our most treasured travel memories.
