The musical comedy that first aired in 2009 has just received a fresh lease on life. On Oct. 21 Disney disclosed that both Disney+ and Hulu have granted a full series order for a long-rumored return of Glee. The original run followed the New Directions choir at Lima, Ohio’s McKinley High, spanning six seasons before ending in 2015. Even a decade later, the show’s soundtrack still draws more than four million monthly listeners on Spotify, underscoring its lasting cultural impact.
Official greenlight and production details
Disney shared only a single teaser image—a stylized L-for-loser logo—to confirm the revival’s home on its streaming platforms. The production will be handled by 20th Television the same studio that produced the original series. While no casting announcements have been made, the announcement itself suggests a revival rather than a full reboot, meaning the new episodes will likely continue the story of the original characters rather than start from scratch.
Ryan Murphy’s renewed enthusiasm and the new script
Co-creator Ryan Murphy first floated the idea in August, noting, “So many young people now watch it, and I’m like, ‘Maybe we should revisit that show.’” By September, he had finished a fresh script alongside fellow creators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan telling Entertainment Tonight, “Funny you ask, because I just finished the script an hour ago.” Murphy’s recent interview with Entertainment Tonight revealed that he has already reached out to roughly ten members of the original ensemble, describing the outreach as “very sweet” and saying, “They’ve all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.”
Original cast prospects and fan expectations
The legacy cast includes Lea MicheleMatthew MorrisonJane LynchChris ColferDianna Agron among others. Some actors have publicly expressed optimism: Michele told E! that she “will always love Glee” and would “follow Ryan wherever he goes,” while Lynch said she would be “so happy” to return. Conversely, Colfer, who was not among those Murphy initially contacted, remarked to Bustle, “It was a really tough show to do, and it would be really hard to do it now that Naya Rivera is gone.” He added that Glee fans would “come after me with pitchforks and jazz hands if I said no,” highlighting both the challenge and the enthusiasm surrounding a possible reunion. The series will need to navigate the legacy of late cast members—Cory Monteith, Naya Rivera, and Mark Salling—whose contributions remain integral to the show’s history.
With the revival officially ordered, anticipation is building not only among the original talent but also among a new generation discovering the show for the first time. As Disney+ and Hulu prepare to roll out the next chapter, the blend of nostalgia and fresh musical numbers promises
