Embracing Authenticity: A Personal Evolution

Join us as we delve into a remarkable story of self-discovery and the freedom that comes with embracing one's true self.

Embracing Authenticity: A Personal Evolution

In the tapestry of life, we often find ourselves weaving threads of others’ expectations into our own stories. For decades, I was no exception, allowing the voices of parents, teachers, friends, and society to dictate my path. It was not until later in life that I realized the profound impact of listening to my own inner voice.

The journey began in high school, where my passion for art and design led me to dream of becoming an engineer. However, societal norms dictated that mechanical drafting classes were reserved for boys. This early encounter with gender bias sparked a fire within me, leading to a battle with the school board and ultimately, a victory that allowed me to pursue my passion.

The Awakening of Self-Awareness

Years later, in college, I found myself often the only woman in engineering classes. This experience made me reflect on the ease with which we can lose ourselves when surrounded by others’ expectations. For a long time, I conformed, but somewhere in my 60s, a shift occurred.

I began to understand that the energy spent worrying about others’ opinions was energy that could be better spent creating an authentic life. This realization brought a sense of freedom and a new perspective on decision-making. No longer did I need to explain or justify my choices to others. I only needed to understand and embrace them myself.

The Liberation of Authenticity

As the years passed, I learned that most people are too preoccupied with their own lives to focus on mine. This understanding was liberating, allowing me to make choices based on what felt right to me, rather than what others expected. This shift in perspective guided many of my decisions, including rebuilding my business, Dancing Dingo, around what felt meaningful.

I found myself choosing a quieter life, one with less striving and more purpose. Some opportunities I embraced, while others I declined because they no longer aligned with my true self. This small shift changed me more than I ever expected. Life felt quieter, simpler, and more honest. It also made me more giving, compassionate, and expressive.

The Power of Self-Trust

These days, when making decisions, I ask myself a different question: “Does this feel right to me?” This simple query has guided me towards a life that is more genuinely me. It has allowed me to follow my own instincts and let go of others’ expectations. This journey has been a profound one, teaching me the value of self-trust and the freedom that comes with authenticity.

After decades of learning who I am, it seems a shame to spend the rest of my life asking permission to be that person. The greatest gift of growing older is understanding that we have earned the right to be ourselves – unapologetically, wholly, and joyfully.
