As I approach my 80th birthday, I find myself reflecting on the vibrant possibilities that lie ahead. Turning 79 feels like a gateway to a new era rather than a point of decline. With renewed clarity and energy, I am eager to embrace this next chapter of life. This transition represents an opportunity to redefine my priorities and focus on what truly matters.
In a previous piece, I discussed my journey into reFirement—a term I use to describe my active approach to life after retirement. The five key elements of my new focus have become increasingly significant: family, fulfillment, fun, friends, and fitness. These pillars guide my daily choices and help cultivate a meaningful existence.
Redefining my living environment
Recently, I made a transformative decision to relocate to a continuing care retirement community (CCRC). This choice has created a new rhythm in my life, emphasizing engagement rather than withdrawal. Surprisingly, this change has not diminished my lifestyle but has allowed for a right-sizing of my living circumstances. By planning for future healthcare needs now, I have alleviated concerns that could overshadow my daily experience.
Finding freedom in daily life
Living in a community where essential tasks such as meal preparation and maintenance are taken care of has liberated my mind. I can now concentrate on the present instead of worrying about the future. My schedule is not empty; rather, I find myself more present, dedicating my energy to activities that inspire me—writing, mentoring, engaging in lifelong learning, and pursuing creative projects. This newfound freedom allows me to prioritize what truly resonates with my passions.
Setting personal goals for growth
Every year, I establish what I refer to as a Big Grin Goal—a personal aspiration that challenges me while igniting joy and purpose. This year, my goal is particularly close to my heart: I aim to complete a revised edition of my book, Moving Forward on Your Own: A Financial Guidebook for Widows. This updated version will feature the section titled “The Journey Continues,” which encapsulates the wisdom gained through significant life transitions.
Honoring the journey of self-discovery
This project is not merely a reflection of my past experiences but a celebration of the lessons learned throughout my journey. It emphasizes that as we age, our capacity for creative contribution remains intact, proving that meaningful work can continue to enrich our lives well into our later years. As I embark on this project, I am reminded that my age does not dictate my vitality; it is my groundedness in the present that truly matters.
As I enter my 80s, I have become more discerning about how I allocate my energy. I’ve learned to say ‘yes’ to opportunities that align with my values and ‘no’ to distractions that pull me away from my goals. Rather than measuring aging by what we lose, I prefer to focus on the riches we gain—like perspective, patience, and self-trust.
Embracing uncertainty and celebration
Today, I find comfort in the uncertainties of life, recognizing that change is a constant companion. My focus is not on the length of my days but on the quality of my experiences and the conscious choices I make. If you find yourself approaching a significant birthday or facing a personal transition, I encourage you to take a moment for reflection. What intentions can you set for yourself? What passions can you reignite?
Aging should not be viewed as winding down but as an opportunity to open up. It involves clarifying priorities, letting go of what no longer serves us, and remaining curious and engaged in our surroundings. As I enter my 80th year, I choose to move forward without a checklist but with a posture of openness, intention, and gratitude for the unfolding journey.
