Reaching the milestone of 80 years is a notable occasion, often marked by reflection and anticipation. As I prepare to celebrate my 79th birthday, I recognize that I am not merely approaching a new decade; I am actively entering my 80th year. This transition does not intimidate me; rather, it sparks a sense of excitement and possibility.
For many women, entering a decade that ends in zero can serve as a stark reminder of the passage of time. However, for me, this shift feels expansive and liberating. Life may still present its complexities and challenges, but I have gained a clarity of purpose that informs my decisions and actions moving forward.
Redefining thriving in later life
In previous reflections, I discussed the concept of reFirement instead of retirement. This idea revolves around five essential pillars: family, fulfillment, fun, friends, and fitness. These themes have become increasingly significant as I navigate my new lifestyle.
Since relocating to a continuing care retirement community (CCRC), I have learned that thriving at this stage of life is less about remaining busy and more about intentionality. With each choice, I focus on what truly matters while letting go of distractions that do not enhance my well-being.
Transforming goals into reality
Last year, I set an important personal objective known as my Big Grin Goal, aimed at challenging and inspiring me. My goal was to transition to a CCRC before I turned 80, and I wanted to do so from a position of strength and choice rather than urgency. To my surprise, I achieved this goal ahead of schedule, and the results have been invigorating.
Rather than viewing my move as a retreat, I consider it an opportunity for renewed energy and engagement. Planning for future health care needs has alleviated burdens I did not know I was carrying. This transition was not about downsizing but about right-sizing my life, allowing me to feel less pressured to do everything and more liberated to pursue what I find meaningful.
Creating a new rhythm of living
Living in a community where responsibilities like meal preparation and home maintenance are managed has granted me a newfound mental space. Instead of worrying about potential issues, I focus on the present moment. This shift allows me to invest my energy in writing, mentoring, building friendships, and engaging in creative projects that ignite my passion.
This transition is not an ending; it is an exciting new chapter filled with opportunities for joy. I celebrate the freedom that comes from prioritizing what truly matters in my life.
Setting meaningful intentions
This year, my Big Grin Goal is deeply personal and ambitious: I aim to complete a revised edition of my financial guidebook, Moving Forward on Your Own: A Financial Guidebook for Widows. This updated version will include a new section titled “The Journey Continues,” which highlights the insights gained after experiencing significant life changes.
This endeavor is not merely about revisiting my past; it is a chance to honor the journey and acknowledge the wealth of knowledge we accumulate as we age. The essence of this project lies in the belief that our capacity for creative contribution is timeless, allowing us to engage in meaningful work well into our later years.
