This funding, part of the Mechanistic Clinical Award program, supports pioneering studies on ginger supplementation, physical activity, and a comprehensive online wellness program designed to improve the quality of life for individuals with lupus.

Lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease, affects millions worldwide, with symptoms and severity varying greatly among individuals. Despite advancements in targeted therapies, many patients continue to grapple with fatigue, fluctuating disease activity, medication side effects, and organ damage. This underscores the need for complementary, low-risk strategies that can be safely integrated into existing treatment plans.

Innovative Approaches to Lupus Management

Lifestyle interventions present a promising avenue for improving outcomes in lupus, yet research in this area has been historically underfunded. The LRA is committed to exploring every potential avenue that could enhance clinical outcomes and quality of life for lupus patients. The Mechanistic Clinical Award program supports innovative pilot studies focused on precision medicine and the underlying mechanisms of therapies, with a particular emphasis on lifestyle interventions for this year.

Ginger Supplementation and Immune Response

Dr. Jason Knight from the University of Michigan is investigating the effects of ginger supplementation on neutrophil activation in lupus patients. Neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, play a crucial role in driving inflammation through the release of spider web-like structures known as neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). These structures can trigger additional harmful immune reactions. Dr. Knight’s study aims to determine if ginger-derived compounds can reduce harmful neutrophil activation, potentially offering a simple, patient-friendly strategy to complement existing lupus treatments.

Whole Health Empowerment for Lupus (WHEEL) Program
