Weekends in the city can be unpredictable, but this one was filled with laughter, games, and unexpected encounters. My honorary niece Grace, a bright young woman from England, is spending her summer in New York, conducting medical research. With a rainy Saturday on our hands, we decided to make the most of it.
Art of Play: A magical escape
Our first stop was Art of Play a charming magic and games store nestled in Brooklyn Heights. The store is a treasure trove of puzzles and games that captivate all ages. Grace, at 16, was just as enthralled as I was, at 47. The shop owner’s bell, which rings every time someone solves a puzzle, added an extra layer of excitement to our visit.
The store’s collection of interactive puzzles was a hit with all of us. It was fascinating to see how these games brought out the inner child in everyone, regardless of age. The atmosphere was lively, and the sense of accomplishment when solving a puzzle was truly rewarding.
Unexpected encounters and laughter
Later, I stumbled upon a funny New Yorker comic that had me chuckling. I met up with Alison, a friend who always brings a unique twist to any gathering. Alison, known for her quirky personality, now carries a trash grabber wherever she goes. “People sometimes compare me to David Sedaris” she laughed, “But it’s a small way to give back to the neighborhood.” Alison’s community spirit is truly inspiring, and her cute skirt added a touch of style to our meet-up.
We then headed to our friends’ apartment to watch England play in the World Cup. The game was thrilling, and the excitement was palpable. It was a perfect way to spend a rainy evening, surrounded by friends and good food.
Freddie’s return from a week-long cruise
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Freddie returned from a week-long cruise with his extended family. Every phone call from the ship felt like a promise: “I’ll come back to you, I promise!” It was heartwarming to see him share his adventures and the memories he had made.
An unexpected connection
In a delightful twist, I discovered that Sonya Walger the actress who played Penny in a popular TV series, is also the author of the incredible novel Lion. What’s even more amazing is that she is a Cup of Jo reader! It’s always exciting to find such unexpected connections in the world of literature and entertainment.
As the weekend came to a close, I couldn’t help but reflect on the joy and laughter it brought. From magical puzzles to World Cup excitement, it was a weekend filled with memorable moments. I’m already looking forward to the next one.
