When the first snow falls and the house fills with twinkling lights, many families reach for that classic holiday portrait – parents, children, and a perfectly arranged backdrop. In the 1990s, however, four-legged members of the family were often left out of the frame, simply because photo studios didn’t cater to them. This year, that gap disappears. A partnership between Pedigree and Walmart invites pet owners to include their dogs in the holiday picture-perfect moment, turning a nostalgic tradition into a canine-friendly celebration.
The collaboration leans on the star power of Alfonso Ribeiro, the beloved 90s TV host, who says, “There is so much nostalgia for the 90s all around these days, including those iconic photo studios; To be able to go back to that time a bit and to do it with your dog — with your family, thanks to Pedigree and Walmart, is very cool.” Ribeiro’s enthusiasm sets the tone for a series of free, nostalgic photo sessions that travel to select Walmart locations throughout the holiday season.
Pedigree Pawliday Portrait Studio rolls out to select Walmart stores
The Pedigree Pawliday Portrait Studio transforms ordinary retail aisles into a pop-up studio reminiscent of the classic Walmart Family Portrait corners of the 1990s. Families can walk in with their dogs for a complimentary professional shoot featuring retro holiday backdrops, vintage-style sweaters, and playful props that scream festive cheer. The experience is scheduled at five locations: Burbank, CA (Nov. 6-7), Chandler, AZ (Nov. 13-14), Baytown, TX (Nov. 17-18), Denton, TX (Nov. 20-21), and Rogers, AR (Dec. 4-5). Each slot runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and participants receive digital copies of their images right after the session.
In-store extras and limited-edition ornaments
While the portrait itself is free, Walmart adds a few festive touches for shoppers who show proof of purchasing a Pedigree product priced at $5 or more. Qualified families can take home a custom-embossed ornament that features their dog’s smiling face, turning a simple photo into a lasting holiday keepsake. The pop-up also offers samples of Pedigree TASTY™ BISCUITS, seasonal treats for owners, and a handful of holiday giveaways while supplies last.
Online sweepstakes for home photographers
Not near a participating store? Pet parents can still join the celebration by creating a throwback-style portrait at home and submitting it at /Pawliday. Every entry is entered into a sweepstakes that awards a hand-painted recreation of the photo and a Pedigree Pawliday Gift Box containing a year’s supply of the newly reformulated adult recipes. The new formulas feature Vitamin GoodBites™ kibble – plus-sign-shaped pieces enriched with Vitamin C, Biotin, and a balanced blend of essential nutrients.
Holiday activities that let your dog share the spotlight
Beyond the photo studio, there are simple ways to make your dog feel like the star of the season. A cozy movie night, for instance, pairs a warm blanket, a bowl of popcorn for you, and a tasty chew toy for your pup while you stream a film that highlights a heart-warming human-dog bond. The shared experience deepens the emotional connection and adds a sprinkle of holiday sentiment that can turn a regular Tuesday into a memorable family tradition.
Another low-key idea is to carve out a dedicated holiday nook for your canine companion. Choose a soft rug or plush blanket, sprinkle a few pet-safe ornaments, and scatter seasonal dog toys like squeaky candy-canes or plush snowflakes. This personalized corner not only gives your dog a festive safe haven during bustling gatherings, but it also provides a calm retreat when the house gets noisy. Adding a matching family pet sweater reinforces the theme and makes for adorable candid shots.
For dogs who love a little adventure, an evening drive through neighborhoods decked in Christmas lights can become a magical joyride. Pack a festive blanket, turn on a holiday playlist, and cruise slowly enough to let your pooch soak in the sparkle. If your pet prefers paws on the pavement, opt for a twilight walk along well-lit streets. Finally, consider giving back: a donation of time or money to the Pedigree Foundation or a local shelter spreads the season’s goodwill to dogs in need, turning your celebrations into a ripple of kindness.
