The world of Westeros is about to be engulfed in flames once more as House of the Dragon returns for its highly anticipated third season. Two years after the tragic conclusion of the previous season, fans are eager to witness the next chapter in the Targaryen dynasty’s tumultuous history. The upcoming season, available on HBO Max promises to raise the stakes with spectacular battles and intense political drama.
The new episodes will delve into the devastating Dance of the Dragons a civil war that tore the Targaryen dynasty apart during its heyday. The season will open with one of the most ambitious battles in the entire fantasy saga created by George R.R. Martin. The Battle of the Narrow Sea a brutal and bloody naval conflict, is set to leave an indelible mark on the history of Westeros.
The Battle for Westeros
At the heart of the battle will be Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) and his fleet, fighting to repel the offensive led by Tyland Lannister (Jefferson Hall) and the forces of the Triarchy. Meanwhile, the war for the Iron Throne will reach a decisive phase with the return of Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) to the Red Keep ready to reclaim King’s Landing and consolidate her position.
This season promises to be a golden age for Game of Thrones fans, with the franchise continuing to expand. As we eagerly await the new season of House of the Dragon let’s take a look at the current status of each Game of Thrones spin-off.
Exploring the Game of Thrones Universe
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set about a century before Game of Thrones in a Westeros still reeling from the Blackfyre Rebellion. With dragons now extinct and the Targaryens less powerful, this buddy series focuses on more intimate and adventurous stories rather than the struggles for the Iron Throne. The protagonist is Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk), a knight-errant played by Peter Claffey accompanied by his young squire Egg portrayed by Dexter Sol Ansell.
Based on Martin’s novellas, the spin-off takes a lighter tone as it follows their travels. HBO has confirmed a second season of six episodes. Showrunner Ira Parker has stated that the team is having a lot of fun working on it.
House of the Dragon
While A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms highlights the dark humor and hope present in the fantasy universe, House of the Dragon showcases the relentless cruelty of that world. Set nearly two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones the series chronicles the onset of the civil war that will shape the fate of the Targaryen dynasty.
When King Viserys I Targaryen decides to name his daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen heir to the Iron Throne—breaking with a long-standing tradition that favored men in the line of succession—it triggers a deep rift within the Royal Family. As the years pass, the relationship between Rhaenyra and her former childhood friend Alicent Hightower—who became queen after marrying Viserys—turns into a fierce rivalry. The struggle for the throne divides the Targaryen house and drags Westeros into a bloody conflict destined to forever alter the balance of power in the realm.
The series will conclude with its fourth season, though viewers will have to wait another three years for its television premiere.
Ten Thousand Ships
Ten Thousand Ships is a series set approximately 1,000 years before Game of Thrones and would chronicle the journey of the warrior princess Nymeria from Essos to Dorne following her defeat at the hands of the Dragonlords of Valyria. After being shelved, the project saw a glimmer of hope when Martin announced that he had collaborated with 2026 Pulitzer Prize winner Eboni Booth on a new pilot.
The playwright expressed her enthusiasm, while wryly noting the enormous production challenges associated with ships, dragons, and gigantic creatures. The spin-off is currently in development.
Aegon’s Conquest
The spin-off would follow Aegon I Targaryen his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys and their respective dragons—BalerionVhagar and Meraxes—during the conquest of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. The project would serve as the origin story of the Targaryens’ rule over the continent and would recount the birth of one of the most important symbols of the Game of Thrones saga.
Earlier this year, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the project, which is being considered in two possible formats: as a television series for HBO or as a blockbuster film produced by Warner Bros.
Sea Snake/Nine Voyages
An animated spin-off dedicated to the legendary maritime explorations of Corlys Velaryon—the famous “Sea Snake” and husband of Princess Rhaenys Targaryen—is also reportedly in development. According to rumors reported by Deadline in early 2026, legendary animator Genndy Tartakovsky—creator of acclaimed series such as Primal and Samurai Jack—may be involved in the project.
Tartakovsky is no stranger to creating animated prequels set in major narrative universes: among his best-known works is Star Wars: Clone Wars the Cartoon Network series that foreshadowed the success of the CGI series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
The Golden Empire
The Golden Empire is an animated spin-off set in Yi Ti a rich and mysterious region in the far east of Essos inspired by imperial China. Confirmed by Martin in 2026, the series remains one of the lesser-known projects in the Game of Thrones universe, and its details have yet to be finalized. Yi Ti, famous for its immense cities and great riches, could be featured for the first time in Nine Voyages.
Snow or Stark?
Among the various Game of Thrones spin-offs conceived as prequels, there is also an idea for a sequel centered on the character of Jon Snow. Initially, actor Kit Harington had proposed a story about Jon in exile in the North, haunted by the trauma of past events, but HBO shelved the project because it was considered too dark. In 2026, however, the potential sequel appears to have resurfaced in some form, with a new project linked to Quoc Dang Tran creator of Drops of God which could focus on Arya Stark’s adventures following the events of the original series.
Given the strong connection between Arya and Jon, Harington’s involvement cannot be ruled out. No actors have been announced at this time, but Quoc Dang Tran’s involvement leaves open the possibility that the project might finally come to life.
