How Long-Distance Hiking Transformed My Life After 60

Discover how one woman found new purpose and vitality through long-distance hiking in her 60s, and how you can too.

How Long-Distance Hiking Transformed My Life After 60

In my mid-60s I embarked on a journey that would forever change my perspective on life and aging. This journey wasn’t about traveling to exotic locations or seeking luxury; it was about rediscovering my vitality and connection with the world through long-distance hiking.

My initial foray into long-distance hiking came during a challenging period in my late 50s. Seeking solace and clarity, I ventured into the Himalayas drawn to the stark beauty and the physical challenge it presented. This experience ignited a passion for long-distance hiking that continues to inspire me today.

The Himalayan Awakening

My first significant hiking experience was a 12-day trek in Ladakh, India at an altitude of over 13,000 feet. The remote, roadless terrain offered a sense of isolation and introspection that was profoundly transformative. As they say, it was a place to get lost, a place to meet your maker.

This journey taught me that long-distance hiking is more than just a physical challenge; it’s a journey of self-discovery and connection with nature. I documented this transformative experience in my memoir, Fly Free: A Memoir of Love, Loss and Walking the Path.

The Pacific Crest Trail: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Inspired by my Himalayan adventure, I set out to hike the Pacific Crest Trail in my mid-60s. Unlike the younger through-hikers, I didn’t aim to complete the trail in one go. Instead, I hiked it in sections, allowing myself the time to absorb and integrate each experience.

Each step on the trail taught me valuable lessons about aging and personal growth. I learned that aging isn’t about losing abilities but managing them wisely. It’s about deepening your understanding of the world and savoring every moment.

Completing the Pacific Crest Trail at age 75 was a monumental achievement that reinforced my belief in the body’s capability and the spirit’s resilience. This journey is chronicled in my book, Body and Grace, a Woman’s Hike to Wholeness on the Pacific Crest Trail.

The Continual Journey

My hiking adventures didn’t end with the Pacific Crest Trail. I continued to explore new trails, including sections of the Continental Divide Trail and pilgrimages in Europe. I adapted my gear to make my loads lighter, ensuring that my walks remained a source of spiritual refreshment.

Now in my 80th year, I remain deeply connected to the transformative power of long-distance hiking. It has taught me that there is no end to growing and changing, regardless of age.

If you’re a woman over 60 looking to rediscover your vitality and find new directions, I encourage you to take a long walk. Explore new neighborhoods, countries, or even just your own backyard. As the saying goes, Walk! There is wisdom in your miles.

Reflect on the longest walk you’ve taken. What did you learn about yourself during those hours or days? The journey of self-discovery is just a step away.
