How Mariana Mazzucato’s Common Good Economy Can Reshape Global Markets

Economist Mariana Mazzucato proposes a radical shift in economic theory to prioritize the common good, aiming to tackle global inequality and climate crises.

How Mariana Mazzucato's Common Good Economy Can Reshape Global Markets

In a world grappling with inequality and climate change, economist Mariana Mazzucato offers a bold vision for economic transformation. Her concept of the common good economy challenges traditional economic models, advocating for a system that prioritizes shared prosperity and planetary well-being.

Mazzucato, a professor at University College London, argues that current economic theories have failed to address the most pressing global issues. Her new book, The Common Good Economy: A New Compass calls for a fundamental shift in how governments and economies operate, focusing on equitable growth and environmental sustainability.

Governments as Active Shapers of Markets

Mazzucato contends that governments must reclaim their role as active shapers of markets rather than passive administrators. She criticizes the neoliberal consensus that has dominated economic policy since the 1980s, which she argues has debased the public sphere and prioritized efficiency over civic well-being.

“Governments need to get back their mojo,” Mazzucato states. “They are the supreme actors, shapers of markets, and arbiters of the economy. They need to start believing they can govern, wield their power without apology, and stop cringing in the face of the bond markets.”

The Role of Ambition and Inspiration

To inspire collective action, Mazzucato emphasizes the importance of ambitious missions that make people dream. She points to historical examples like the Artemis moon mission as a source of inspiration, suggesting that similar ambitious goals can drive economic and social progress.

“The reason I’m hopeful is that all of this is possible,” Mazzucato says. “We need a happy narrative for the common good that would inspire young people. They’re all looking up at the sky.”

Challenging the Status Quo

Mazzucato’s ideas challenge the status quo, particularly the notion that private sector innovation is superior to public sector initiatives. In her 2013 book, The Entrepreneurial State she demonstrated that economic success often stems from public sector innovation, citing the internet as a prime example.

She also critiques the reliance on consultancy firms, arguing that this weakens businesses, infantilizes governments, and warps economies. Mazzucato’s holistic approach draws from various disciplines, including biology and Indigenous knowledge, to offer a fresh perspective on economic theory.

As the world faces unprecedented challenges, Mazzucato’s vision for a common good economy offers a compelling alternative to traditional economic models. By prioritizing shared prosperity and environmental sustainability, her ideas could pave the way for a more equitable and resilient global economy.
