In the heart of Utah, a new kind of gold rush is unfolding. This time, it’s not prospectors with pickaxes but tech-savvy entrepreneurs backed by Silicon Valley’s deepest pockets. Turner Caldwell, cofounder and CEO of Mariana Minerals is at the forefront of this movement, aiming to revolutionize the mining industry with artificial intelligence and autonomous equipment.
Caldwell, a Stanford graduate and former Tesla employee, is one of many young entrepreneurs lured back into the mines by the promise of a tech-driven mining renaissance. With an $85 million investment from venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz Caldwell is transforming traditional mining operations into high-tech hubs.
The AI-Driven Mining Revolution
The mining industry is on the cusp of a significant transformation, driven by the insatiable demand for critical metals like copper, lithium, cobalt, and nickel. These metals are essential for building data centers, nuclear reactors, solar farms, and other infrastructure that supports the growth of artificial intelligence and renewable energy.
According to S&P Global the demand for copper alone is expected to increase by 50% by 2040. Meanwhile, China maintains a near-total dominance over the critical-minerals market, prompting a scramble among Western nations to secure their own supplies. This has led to a surge in mining startups, each offering a unique approach to ore discovery, mining, and refining.
The Rise of Mining Startups
Companies like WetstoneAstroForge and KoBold Metals are leveraging AI and other advanced technologies to explore new frontiers in mining. Wetstone is pursuing deep-sea mining rights, while AstroForge has raised $55 million to mine metals on asteroids. KoBold Metals, backed by investors including Andreessen Horowitz and Jeff Bezos, is using AI to discover untapped minerals in places like Zambia.
These startups promise a safer and more efficient era of mining, one that is less reliant on backbreaking labor and more focused on technological innovation. However, the mining industry is notoriously expensive and capital-intensive, with projects often requiring billions of dollars in investment.
The Challenges of Modern Mining
Despite the optimism, the mining industry faces significant challenges. Robert Friedland, billionaire founder of Ivanhoe Mines notes that a hundred million dollars is merely a drop in the bucket for the mining industry. Morgan Bazilian, a professor of public policy at the Colorado School of Mines points out that mining is a brutal industry plagued by a shrinking labor pool and stunted by permits that can take a decade to get.
“Digging up ore is a totally different thing than whether you can raise money in Silicon Valley,” Bazilian says. “A lot of those companies will go bankrupt.” The harsh realities of mining, including environmental concerns and the physical demands of the work, have historically made it difficult to attract a steady workforce.
The Appeal of a Pioneer Lifestyle
Yet, for many young entrepreneurs and tech workers, the allure of a pioneer lifestyle is strong. Caldwell and other mining founders have found that employees view their pioneering lifestyle as a feature, not a flaw. KoBold Metals has mandatory trips for everyone to work for a few weeks on site at mines in Sweden, Arizona, or Zambia, with a waitlist for multiple trips.
General Matter, a uranium enrichment startup backed by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, has also seen employees embrace life at the enrichment facility in Paducah, Kentucky. “When people get to experience it firsthand, many of them don’t want to live in California anymore,” says General Matter founder Scott Nolan.
The Future of Mining
As the world grapples with the environmental and economic implications of the AI boom, the mining industry stands at a crossroads. Caldwell and other visionaries believe that AI will make mining more profitable, environmentally friendly, and efficient. However, the path forward is fraught with challenges, and only time will tell which startups will succeed and which will falter.
One thing is clear: the next 150 years will be dominated by metals, and the race to secure these critical resources is just beginning. As Caldwell puts it, “The last 150 years have been dominated by oil and gas. The next 150 years are going to be dominated by metals.”
