When UCF alum Audra Martin, ’08 – R-TV / Broadcast Journalism – first learned that she had landed her fantastic new role with Fox Sports North, she had a few people to turn to for the news. But he says the call to Dr. Tim Brown, his radio-television professor at the Nicholson School of Communication (NSC), came second only to the one he made to his parents. ‘I just knew he would be thrilled,’ he laughed.
‘I can’t say enough about my education and the Nicholson School professors,’ offered Martin. “It was huge. And this is the honest truth. ‘She then described how the R-TV program at NSC provided her with the skills, hands-on experience, advice, guidance and in-depth preparation she would need for most situations encountered in order to excel in the his professional career.

Among her other bragging rights, Martin was Miss University of Central Florida 2008 and while living in Florida she helped pass ‘Jeff’s Law’, a state law that combats online bullying. Martin’s move to Fox Sports North resulted in an immediate move from Nashville to Minnesota. ‘It happened so fast!’ she said. ‘I got here and was working two days later!’ During the phone interview, she was still unpacking in her new home.
“I was originally from Chicago, went to UCF for college, then to Atlanta, then to Alabama and then to Nashville,” Martin said. ‘I’ve lived in the south since 2004. So, I’m going through a cold-weather readjustment!’ She is thrilled to be returning to the Midwest, though, and that in her new position she has the opportunity to cover two of the sports she is most passionate about.
A two-sports athlete herself since high school, Martin’s first taste of reporting on pro hockey was in a part-time role with the Atlanta Thrashers. ‘And that’s when I really understood that I wanted a full-time sports career,’ said Martin. Once the Thrashers moved to Canada in 2011, Martin said it’s been a slow career process for a while. She moved to Huntsville, gained more experience there, and later got a job at the ABC Affiliate Station in Nashville.
‘Working in local sport was such a great experience,’ he said. ‘I’ve learned so much about becoming a better photographer, for example.’ He added that throughout his career, colleagues have been impressed with the varied skills and background he received at the NSC, in writing, editing and other important areas. Then, he laughed, ‘I even learned how to edit on tape!’ He said that at the ABC branch in Huntsville, the diversity of those skills ‘was enormous in helping me get that job.’
Martin shared what impressed her the most at UCF: “The professors at Nicholson School were very honest about the expectations of what is needed to be successful in this profession. There were no surprises. I knew exactly what awaited me. ‘
