Interviewer: Your hit list made me feel like a lazy person. How did you get here?
Ben Gleib: So slowly. It took a long time to build my resume in this industry. You have to stay focused and never doubt yourself, and eventually, all of these things start piling up. I remember like it was yesterday, at 23, just graduating from college and writing and presentation performances always getting turned down.

I worked on one particular program for three full years of college, and when I graduated I decided to write a pilot and submit it to the TV networks. Nobody wanted it and I had to pick up my pieces and move on. Eventually, the National Lampoon Network picked it up and it lasted for three seasons.

Things continued from there. The following year, I was cast in my first film, Starz Bar . Then, a few years later, I was asked to join Chelsea Lately , where I stayed for a full seven years. Then, I was chosen to voice Marshall the Sloth Ice Age: Continental Drift . Things happened one after another and I never stopped moving or looking for opportunities.

Interviewer: It’s hard to talk to you right now and not imagine a cartoon sloth holding the receiver on the other side. Anyway, how is your game show going?
Ben Gleib: When the Chelsea Lately show finished, my Idiotest showon air. Since then we have already made over 105 episodes. It’s crazy how things really went together. I’ve always wanted to host my own show and it supports my ultimate goal of wanting to be a late night talk show host. Dude, I couldn’t be happier. I have my own schedule and it’s great. The whole show is about making people look stupid and laughing at them; is my specialty. Eventually I want to be on a late night talk show, so this isn’t a bad step.

Interviewer: How Has Chelsea Been Working Lately ? Chelsea Handler is ‘I do myself’ as it sounds?
Ben Gleib: It is exactly how you would imagine it. She is very outspoken and extravagant on and off the set. She is an amazing woman and working with her has been amazing. You always had to be alert around her. Talk about shit like crazy! She is a woman who challenges things and lives as she wants.

Interviewer: You are often asked to be a guest star on NPR and CNN to discuss politics. Who are you advocating for the next president?
Ben Gleib: Actually, I’m really undecided at this point. They all look really interesting. Bernie Sanders is extremely intriguing. I’m just legitimately trying to see what everyone is talking about. I’m definitely not going to vote for Trump, though.

Interviewer: Why not ?! Who wouldn’t vote for a weird racist celebrity?
Ben Gleib: That boy is absolutely crazy! He is not someone who runs for politics.

Interviewer: You just wrote an interesting editorial about Donald Trump for the Huffington Post …
Ben Gleib: Yes, for some ill reason many people misread him and thought I was supporting him, when in fact I was completely opposed to that specter. I really said something along the lines of ‘electing Trump would definitely lead to World War III’. I said it was very interesting and the way he talks about politics is very interesting because it is crude and carries a lot of criticism. When he argues after debates and interviews after interviews saying he is confident in dealing with Syria and Russia because, ‘Well, I have a great relationship with them. They will love me ‘, it’s not really a great plan, because it shows that he really gets along with the worst of all.

Interviewer: How important is it to bring comedy into things that aren’t as lighthearted as the filthy world of politics?
Ben Gleib: One of the best ways to attack truth and power is through jokes. If you’re going to tell the truth, it better be funny, otherwise they’ll kill you.

I think people like to laugh and they can accept the honest truth more when they laugh. It’s just a good way to point things out. Everything is just a little bit more effective when laughter is involved.

Interviewer: Interesting. So how does your mind turn serious problems into comical and yet provocative?
Ben Gleib: I am quite in favor of marijuana, for sure.

Interviewer: Is this your official endorsement in favor of weed?
Ben Gleib: I will publicly support him. In fact, the basis for a segment of a web series I made was a fantasy cinema in Colorado that served weed, it was called ‘Trinidope’. It was a fantasy … at the time. Six months after I shot it, Colorado opened a grass theater.

Interviewer: How is your creative process going?
Ben Gleib: My process is definitely quite fragmented and varied. I keep a notebook and always write down any thoughts that may lead to a skit. Mostly I have great ideas in the middle of great conversations, on a date, or even in the middle of sex. I like to take a break and write it down.

Interviewer: What? It looks awful and rude. Not a good creative process!
Ben Gleib: No, all you have to do is keep the lower half of your body moving. You can still pick up the phone and take notes. It’s multitasking.

Interviewer: I guess you can use the phrase ‘You are my inspiration’ … I guess.
Ben Gleib: Yes, ‘You are my muse, baby!’ It seems pretty bad to think about funny things during that time, doesn’t it? It doesn’t seem like the time to be the subject of a joke. Inspiration comes when it comes.

Interviewer: Ready for Sac?
Ben Gleib: I want people to go out and see the show! I promise not to talk much about politics, I’m ready to share my strange observations about the world with your city. Plus, ready to weed out on this farm-to-table food I’ve heard of.
