In 1996 Bob joined Fox News Channel (FNC) as a legal analyst and was reporting to millions of Americans on some of the most important cases and significant events of our time. His career as an analyst shot up in 2004 when he went there to cover the Scott Peterson trial. INTERVIEW WITH BOB MASSI
Question: Why did you decide to become a lawyer?
Answer: I actually wanted to become a doctor and I was planning to go to medical school. He wasn’t like one of these fans, ‘Oh my God, I have to be a lawyer’ (things). Was it more like I wanted to go to medical school or law school? When you’re 21 and you say, ‘If I want to be a doctor, it’s another 10 or 11 years. If I want to become a lawyer, I will be done in three years and I will start taking action. ‘
I went to law school.
Question: Have you developed a passion for the law?
Answer: in some areas. I’ve always been for losers. All time. I am dyslexic. I didn’t find out until the 1970s. As a result … I’ve always been the underdog in my career. I represent people who have had difficult times or bad things have happened. This is my passion.
Question: Why did you choose to practice civil litigation?
Answer: I could never even think about doing criminal law. I am very black and white. Even if I believe in the Constitution, I could never represent someone who has hurt someone or molested a child. Thank God there (are) people out there who do that, because it keeps the balance, but that’s not how I’m wired.
Question: Is there a particularly memorable case you worked on?
Answer: One is a case I had in the late 1980s, a very sad case. She was a woman whose husband died in a nursing home in Las Vegas. He had multiple sclerosis. When she visited him, the sheets would be stretched, which is sometimes not unusual in a nursing home, but she curtains them so that the sheets are not on her body and make her sweat. Unfortunately, he was unable to communicate. One day, after visiting him for a while, she saw the stress on his face. She took off the covers and he was covered in ulcers all over. It was repellent.
She went to several lawyers. I looked at this and thought it was amazing. We took the nursing home to trial and got a very broad verdict for her. I have had many cases against nursing homes since then, because it really is a geriatric nightmare. Some of these places shouldn’t even be in business.
In case of personal injury, I do many cases of wrongful death … 90% of what I do is legal and 10% is legal. My most important job is to keep everyone’s emotions in check.
Question: How did you get involved with Fox News?
Answer: I first got involved in local news in 1985 with Channel 8. I made a video on how to get out of jail, how to find a lawyer and what to do in case of an accident. I had a segment called ‘Legal Ease’.
In 1995, I heard that Fox News was starting a cable channel. A good friend of mine had a friend and he encouraged me to post a video to Fox News in New York. I got a phone call over Christmas 1995 and Chet Collier and Roger Ailes wanted to talk to me.
They pick up the phone and say, “Hey, boy, I like your style. Your hair is a little long, but we’ll work on it. ‘
I said: ‘For every zero, I cut an inch of hair.’
That’s how we started. I have been under contract with them for 14 years.
Question: Have you ever cut your hair?
Answer: No. Not even a little. People don’t know my name but they see my hair and say, ‘I recognize you from the TV’. It’s kind of become my brand, I guess
