Ron Gant is an American television host from Victoria, Texas who is co-host of WAGA-TV’s Good Day Atlanta morning news program.
Gant is also a former baseball player who played for the Atlanta Braves (1987–1993), Cincinnati Reds (1995), St. Louis Cardinals (1996–1998) and Philadelphia Phillies (1999–2000).
He has also played for Anaheim Angels (2000), Colorado Rockies (2001), Oakland Athletics (2001), San Diego Padres (2002) and again briefly for Athletics in 2003.
RON GANT EARLY LIFE
Gant was born in Victoria, Texas. Her parents are George Gant, a chemistry professor, and Alice Hardeman, a special education teacher.
In high school, Gant played soccer and baseball. He was heavily recruited to play college baseball for schools like Texas and Oklahoma. However, she turned down scholarship offers to turn pro after high school.
RON GANT BASEBALL
In the fourth round of the 1983 MLB draft (100th overall), Gant was drafted by the Atlanta Braves. He joined the Braves in 1987 as a September squad, after winning the Bill Lucas Award as Braves Minor League Player of the Year in 1986.
Gant collected 22 hits in 83 at-bats, including two home runs. During the 1988 season, he was an everyday player for the struggling Braves, who finished with a record of 54-106.
After a disappointing second season in 1989, he was sent to the minor leagues to learn to play on the outfield.
He returned to form and starting lineup in 1990 when he beat .303 with 32 home runs and 84 RBI and winning the National League Comeback Player of the Year.
He also stole thirty-three bases in 1990, qualifying for the club 30-30. In 1991, he doubled that feat by joining Willie Mays (1956-1957) and Bobby Bonds (1977-1978) as the only players in Major League history to date to have two stolen 30 home runs / 30 base seasons in a row. .
In the 1991 World Series, the Braves lost to the Minnesota Twins. Gant beat .267 in the series, with four RBI, as the twins won in a tight and thrilling seventh game.
In 1994, after signing one of the richest contracts in Braves history, Gant broke his right leg in an ATV accident. The Atlanta Braves ended up releasing it.
Gant didn’t play again until 1995, emerging with the Cincinnati Reds before being signed by the St. Lous Cardinals in 1996. Gant retired in 2003 at the age of 38.
