The artist formerly known as Kanye West, now simply Ye, announced that his label will host Yeezy Season 01 on Nov. 4 at the brand’s newly opened flagship on 4317 Beverly Blvd in Los Angeles. The event marks the first Yeezy runway presentation in more than four years, confirming rumors that had circulated after the Paris show in October 2022. Earlier in the year the brand quietly relaunched its basic apparel line online and struck a distribution deal with JD Sports for slides and other footwear, trying to rebuild after the abrupt end of its long-standing partnership with Adidas.
Yeezy Season 01 arrives at the Los Angeles flagship
Opening moments featured the high-pitched E6 note from the piano intro of Ye’s track “Runaway,” a cue that immediately set a confrontational tone. Models encircled a massive mound at the centre of the space, wearing oversized leather trench coats, militaristic jackets, briefs-style shorts and monochrome combat uniforms in bone, charcoal, black and red. Footwear ranged from calf-high chunky combat boots to ultra-thin stilettos, including a pair of cream knee-high boots that resembled a futuristic dominatrix’s armor. The relentless pacing of the catwalk suggested a desire to hammer the utilitarian-fetish aesthetic into the audience’s consciousness.
After the final walk, Ye emerged in an all-black leather ensemble, black military boots and a massive gold tiger-shaped belt buckle, receiving a standing ovation from the packed Koreatown crowd. The reaction demonstrated that, despite years of controversy, the designer still commands a devoted fan base capable of filling a venue the size of a football stadium.
Design language and runway choreography
The collection’s visual language leaned heavily on stark, functional silhouettes, echoing the brand’s early street-wear roots while pushing them into a more avant-garde direction. Military-inspired trench coats and combat uniforms were juxtaposed with fetish-inflected accessories, creating a tension between practicality and spectacle. The choice to commence the show with the E6 piano note from “Runaway” served as both an auditory signature and a reminder of Ye’s musical legacy, linking the fashion moment to his broader artistic persona.
Lighting was minimal, allowing the clothing’s texture and the models’ movements to dominate the visual field. The set’s central mound acted as a symbolic mountain, perhaps alluding to Ye’s own climb back to relevance after a period of isolation from the fashion industry.
From controversy to comeback: why the show matters
The Los Angeles event cannot be viewed without recalling the storm that surrounded Ye’s last runway in October 2022 during Paris Fashion Week. Models that night donned shirts emblazoned with the phrase “White Lives Matter,” triggering a public clash with Vogue editor Gabriella Karefa-Johnson. Ye retaliated online, and the fallout contributed to the termination of his partnership with Adidas after a series of anti-semitic comments. Brands such as Balenciaga, Gap and several luxury houses withdrew support, leaving the designer’s commercial infrastructure in tatters.
Nevertheless, the standing ovation at the Beverly Blvd showroom suggests that a core segment of fans remains loyal, and the collaboration with JD Sports hints at a gradual re-entry into mainstream retail. The appearance of industry figures like Naomi Campbell on the runway, alongside the walk-out of personalities such as Jaden Smith, underscores the polarised reception the collection continues to generate. Ultimately, Yeezy Season 01 serves as both a bold fashion statement and a litmus test for whether the brand can sustain relevance amid ongoing cultural and commercial challenges.
