Minerva, who recently created this look for Demi Lovato‘s Camp Rock 3 premiere, shares her insights on how to find your perfect match and achieve a flawless, skin-matched manicure.

Minerva explains that the closeness of the match depends on the desired effect. A complete match creates an illusion of longer fingers, while going a couple of shades lighter adds contrast and makes the manicure stand out. She advises against choosing a polish darker than your skin tone, as it can make the nails look stained rather than seamless.
The finish is also crucial. Instead of an opaque color, foundation nails use semi-sheer or jelly polishes that allow your natural nail to peek through. With a high-shine top coat, the result is a glossy, healthy-looking manicure that enhances your natural nails.

To find your ideal foundation nail shade, Minerva recommends starting with your undertones. For very fair and cool-toned skin, she suggests OPI Bubble Bath a soft pink nude with blue undertones. For tan or olive complexions, OPI Put it in Airplane Mode a warm beige, is a great choice. On deeper complexions, she likes OPI Chocolate Moose for a warm mocha shade.
If you’re unsure about your undertones, Minerva suggests OPI Bare My Soul a pinky taupe that works across a wide range of complexions. She also emphasizes that you don’t need to find the perfect shade straight out of the bottle. Layering different sheer polishes can help fine-tune the final color.

Choi used a sophisticated cherry shade in the Michael Kors fall-winter 2026 show, describing it as a color that ‘feels sophisticated without being too deep.’ For those who prefer a cherry with less vibrancy, Juli Russell a Portland, Oregon, nail artist and spokesperson for Sally Beauty suggests a cherry that’s more cola than maraschino, like Nailboo Gel in Cola Kiss.
Earthy greens are also making a statement this fall, with Elle Gerstein a New York City-based nail artist, forecasting moss, khaki green, and deep, muted forest shades. She particularly loves olive with a satin, cat eye, or subtle metallic finish. For a deeper, more arboreal shade, Gerstein recommends Mooncat’s The Stranger or Olive & June’s Mossy.
Other notable trends include molten silver described by Russell as ‘basically jewelry for your nails,’ and sapphire a jewel tone that offers depth and dimension. Choi describes sapphire as a color that can appear incredibly dark and sophisticated indoors, but when it catches the light, it reveals an extraordinary jewel-like blue.

Minerva describes them as ‘so vampy and really wearable.’ Classics include Essie Wicked an almost black merlot, and OPI’s Lincoln Park After Dark a midnight purple.
