Traveling can create unforgettable memories, especially when shared with loved ones. Recently, I embarked on a memorable trip to Greece with my niece, Nicole, a recent college graduate with a keen interest in Greek mythology. This journey held special significance for us, as we don’t often get the chance to spend time together; she lives in California while I reside in Oregon.

The Journey Begins

Our adventure commenced with my flight to San Francisco, where I met Nicole before we boarded a plane to Athens. As an experienced traveler who has explored approximately 100 countries solo, I was excited to have a travel companion. However, it was a surprising twist that my travel buddy was over 40 years younger than me. I quickly realized that I had underestimated the energy of a 22-year-old.

Typically, I prefer to travel at a leisurely pace, taking breaks when needed. However, in Greece, our schedule was packed with activities. Each day was filled with exploration, and I kept reminding myself, “I can rest when I get home.” But with so much to see, rest often felt like a luxury.

Exploring Greece

After a full day of sightseeing in Athens, we would unwind and enjoy cocktails with stunning views before savoring traditional Greek dinners at carefully selected restaurants. Each evening was filled with laughter and unforgettable moments. Just when I thought I could take a breather, we embarked on a Windstar cruise, which was equally busy with activities.

The cruise experience was exhilarating, featuring parties, entertainment, and daily excursions to various islands. We fully immersed ourselves in the unique culture and history of each destination. With ancient ruins to explore and delicious local cuisine to enjoy, sleep felt secondary to the adventure.

Lessons Learned

However, after five days of constant activity, I began to feel unwell. Despite my determination to push through, my body had other plans. Upon returning home, I was struck down by the flu and required three weeks to recover. This experience taught me that the mindset of “I can rest when I get home” is not a sustainable travel strategy. While every moment spent in Greece was worthwhile, I recognize the need to pace myself more effectively in the future.

Ultimately, my time in Greece was nothing short of magical. Despite the fatigue, the memories created during this trip are irreplaceable. Have you ever embarked on a journey that left you utterly exhausted? Where did you go, and was it worth it? Let’s discuss your experiences.
