In a candid conversation on Call Her Daddy on June 17, Olivia Wilde provided a fresh perspective on her past relationship with Harry Styles and the intense scrutiny that followed. Nearly four years after their relationship ended, Wilde reflected on the public’s reaction to their romance and the challenges she faced during the production of Don’t Worry Darling.
The actress and director opened up about the parasocial relationship that fans have with Styles, acknowledging the weight he carries. She also discussed the societal judgments faced by women, particularly those in positions of power and older women in relationships.
Understanding the Public’s Reaction
Wilde expressed confusion about the public’s reaction to her relationship with Styles, noting that it had very little to do with her personally. She attributed the criticism to broader societal issues, including the parasocial relationship that fans have with Styles. “I think it also had a lot to do with the kind of parasocial relationship people have with him, which is a burden that is very weighty and not something I envy. And he carries it with grace,” she said.
The pair began dating during the making of Don’t Worry Darlinga film that became the center of much speculation and drama. Despite the public frenzy, Wilde described their relationship as “lovely,” “sweet,” and “domestic.” She recalled that they existed in a “little bubble” where the judgment never really penetrated.
The Impact of Happiness
Wilde acknowledged that their happiness seemed to inflame critics. She recalled instances where she was criticized for dancing and smiling at Styles’ shows. “Like, I would go to his shows and dance, and people were like, Oh, how could she?… How dare you dance and smile,” she said.
She also cited psychotherapist Esther Perelwho served as a consultant on her latest film, The Inviteto theorize another reason for the judgment she faced. “In this country, motherhood means, No more sexual being for you, young lady. That part of you is over now,” she said, highlighting the puritanical basis of such thinking.
The Chaos Behind the Scenes
Wilde also addressed the drama surrounding the production of Don’t Worry Darlingparticularly the rumors of tension between her and co-star Florence Pugh. She described the time as “f–king bananas” and admitted feeling disconnected from the person the public was talking about.
Despite the public madness, Wilde’s private life was far from salacious. She recalled a sense of real joy and happiness during that time, contrasting it with the chaos outside. “There was all this public madness, but my private life was very far from it,” she said.
Wilde also praised Pugh, noting, “Florence is a force.” She insisted that she loved the film and Pugh’s performance, describing her as “extraordinary” and “the most exciting young actress working today.”
As Wilde continues to reflect on her past experiences, she offers a unique perspective on the challenges faced by women in the public eye and the complexities of navigating relationships under scrutiny.
