After 42 years of broadcasting the weather for WBZ Boston, veteran meteorologist Barry Burbank has retired. He told Emily Rooney Thursday in WGBH News’s Greater Boston that the fascination with science began when he was a child.
‘I was four and a half and we had a hurricane,’ he said. ‘And I could remember sitting on my parents’ living room sofa and putting my hands over my ears, and putting them over my eyes, and going back and forth because I was scared of what I saw and heard. So, from that day on, my parents said I was always at the window wondering if we were going to have another storm like this. ‘
Reflecting on his career, Burbank recalled the record-breaking snowfall of 2015 as one of his most memorable moments as a meteorologist. That winter, Boston received nearly 111 inches of snow.
‘I remember at that point we were looking at everything the world over was saying: Is it possible that we could have had a winter with record-breaking snow?’ He said. “We decided to tone it down and not do it on the air. But deep down, we really thought it was going to be an incredible winter. ‘
Burbank also talked about advances in weather technology. When he started out as a meteorologist, there were only two maps in the studio, one for New England and one for the country.
“We now have very sophisticated mathematical models that guide us in forecasting. This type of science is still an inexact science, so it won’t always be perfect all the time, but we are much better than we were before, ‘he explained.
Additionally, Burbank noted that time has become more important because it is a common denominator. ‘I think everyone is really interested in the weather and apparently some people say the weather has gotten worse and we have more extremes now.
