Tom Holland Adapts to New York Culture for Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Tom Holland, the British actor known for his role as Peter Parker in the Spider-Man franchise, recently shared an amusing anecdote about the cultural differences he encountered while preparing for his latest film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The movie, set to release on July 31, 2026 sees Holland portraying a New York-born-and-raised Peter Parker, a role that presented unique challenges for the actor.

In an interview with Amy Poehler, Holland recounted his struggles with adapting to the New York dialect and etiquette. The actor, who hails from England, found himself overusing polite phrases while rehearsing scenes set in New York. ‘In England, [when you order food] you say, “Please, may I have the burger with number two? Thank you so much, please. Thank you, thank you, thank you,”’ Holland explained. ‘And in America, it’s totally fine to be like, “I’ll have the number two,” and just leave it at that.’ His dialect coach had to intervene, reminding him that a New York kid wouldn’t be so polite when ordering a burger.

Overcoming Cultural Differences

Holland’s dedication to his role led him to embrace the cultural nuances of New York. Despite his initial reluctance, he adhered to the script, even when it meant going against his polite nature. ‘You can see this moment in the movie where someone asks me for a coffee and I just go “Sure,”’ Holland laughed. ‘And even through the suit, you can see that I’m like, “My dad is going to be so disappointed in meeeee.”’

This experience resonated with many, as it highlighted the enduring influence of childhood lessons. Holland’s story reminded us of the small, ingrained habits that shape our daily lives. For instance, some people might feel compelled to respond with ‘¿Cómo estás?’ when greeted in Spanish, even if their language skills are limited. Others might hold doors open for extended periods, waiting for the person behind them, or brush their teeth as soon as they wake up, following a strict routine.

The Anticipated Return of Spider-Man

The upcoming film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day promises an exciting blend of action and drama. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the movie picks up four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Peter Parker, now living alone and crime-fighting in a New York that no longer knows his name, faces new challenges as strange spider mutations begin to affect him. These mutations, including organic webbing, drive Peter to seek help from Bruce Banner, aka the Incredible Hulk, played by Mark Ruffalo.

The trailer also hints at a reunion with familiar faces, including MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon), who still don’t remember Peter following the magical memory wipe at the end of the previous film. However, they remain part of Peter’s life as his neighbors. Ned’s interest in uncovering the true identity of Spider-Man adds an intriguing subplot to the story.

The Mysterious Absence of Sadie Sink

One notable absence in the trailer is Sadie Sink, who has been cast in an undisclosed role. Rumors suggest she might be playing Jean Grey, a mainstay in the X-Men universe. If true, Sink could be the villainous figure controlling people’s minds and causing chaos in New York. Only Peter seems immune to this villain’s effects, setting the stage for a thrilling showdown.

A Record-Breaking Trailer

The film’s previous trailer made history as the first movie trailer to cross 1 billion views, achieving this milestone in just four days. Within 24 hours of its release, the trailer had amassed over 718 million views, highlighting the immense anticipation for the film. Sony chairman Tom Rothman celebrated the achievement, stating, ‘It’s as big as anything we’ve ever made, and yet it feels like nothing we’ve ever made. And it has Tom Holland — and I can say this because I’ve seen the movie — in his finest performance.’

As the release date approaches, fans eagerly await the next chapter in the Spider-Man saga. With its unique blend of action, drama, and cultural insights, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is poised to be a standout entry in the franchise.
