Media and entertainment highlights
What captivated our screens
This year, I attended several Broadway productions, with Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) standing out. This musical narrates the story of a jaded New Yorker and a socially awkward Englishman on their way to a wedding. Its witty and heartfelt lyrics resonate, evoking the cleverness found in Fleabag but enhanced by music.
Kelsey took her young daughter to see Hola Frida, an animated film centered on the early life of Frida Kahlo. The narrative explores themes of identity and overcoming adversity, resonating deeply with both children and adults. Margot, Kelsey’s daughter, was thrilled to see a genuine Frida Kahlo painting afterward, adding to their cultural outing.
Books that inspired us
Literary treasures from the year
In terms of reading, I enjoyed several titles, including The Correspondent by Virginia Evans, James by Percival Everett, and The Ten Year Affair by Erin Somers. Each book offered a unique perspective and storytelling style, enriching my literary experience.
Kelsey found solace in Jen Hatmaker’s memoir, Awake, which chronicles her journey through a challenging divorce. As someone who shares a similar background, Kelsey appreciated the insights into leaving a faith community. Her reading list also included atmospheric novels set in natural landscapes, such as God of the Woods and Whale Fall.
Everyday life enhancements
Simple solutions for a smoother routine
In daily living, I discovered several items that notably enhanced my comfort and convenience. One standout was a set of Sabre cutlery, which has quickly become a staple in my kitchen. Additionally, I invested in an egg boiler that produces perfectly cooked jammy eggs, simplifying breakfast and snacks.
Kelsey highlighted her appreciation for an electric heated floor mat, which has transformed her work-from-home experience. Long hours at her desk often left her feet chilly, but this addition has made a significant difference, helping her stay focused and comfortable throughout the day.
Lessons learned and new experiences
Insights from personal growth
Both Kelsey and I ventured into new territory this year, engaging in activities that pushed our boundaries. Kelsey joined a grief support group after the loss of her father. Though it may seem unusual to find excitement in this, she experienced relief in connecting with others who understand her pain. Their gatherings, facilitated by The Dinner Party network, provided a safe space for sharing, grieving, and even finding moments of joy amidst sorrow.
On a lighter note, I embraced a fashion trend inspired by my friend Liz, opting for striped turtlenecks layered under cozy sweaters. With the winter chill setting in, I discovered the comfort of wool socks, which have kept my feet warm during colder months.
