Embracing flexibility in goal-setting
Nine vision boards currently adorn the wall of my office, each reflecting my journey as a financial planner. While I cannot predict every twist and turn life may take, I can prepare for a range of possibilities. This year, I have adopted a theme that may seem unconventional: go with the flow!
The process of creating a vision board is unique to each individual. Personally, I do not begin with a clear vision. Instead, I allow my subconscious to guide me toward words, phrases, and images from various magazines, collaborating with other women crafting their boards. In previous years, my boards showcased themes like “Plan for your best year yet!” and “Enjoy time at home.” This year’s theme emerged spontaneously as I encountered the phrase “Go with the flow!”
The journey of creation
During the pandemic, I vividly recall crafting my vision board over Zoom. Despite the physical distance, the camaraderie we shared—filled with laughter and creative exchanges—made the process enjoyable. Each time I flipped through the magazines, I paused at images and phrases that resonated with me, creating a collage that reflected my aspirations. This year’s journey has made me realize that perhaps I have been embracing a flow state more than I previously acknowledged.
Understanding the science behind vision boards
Curiosity led me to explore the science of vision boards, and I consulted a new resource, ChatGPT. I discovered that the human brain processes visual information 60,000 times quicker than text. Moreover, visualization activates the same neural pathways as actual experiences, enhancing motivation and commitment. This knowledge has solidified my appreciation for the vision board that now hangs on my wall.
Research indicates that individuals who write down and visualize their goals are 33-42% more likely to achieve them. I view my vision board as an engaging form of goal-setting, far more enjoyable than a mundane list. Additionally, the collage format minimizes cognitive overload by presenting multiple goals in a singular, coherent visual.
Navigating the year with flexibility
It may seem contradictory for someone like me—who often emphasizes meticulous planning—to adopt a theme centered around going with the flow. However, I have realized that structure and spontaneity can coexist. For instance, this year, my primary wellness goal is to engage in daily exercise. Yet, life’s unpredictability requires adaptability.
When my schedule changes unexpectedly, such as an early morning appointment disrupting my usual walk, I embrace the idea of going with the flow. This might mean visiting the YMCA later in the day or opting for a serene evening stroll. Recently, in response to chilly mornings, I have turned to exercise apps like Down Dog yoga or Body Groove dance, allowing me to work out at home at my convenience. My focus remains consistent; I simply adapt to the circumstances.
Making small adjustments
This principle also applies to my approach toward finances and organization. With a clearly defined focus—be it preparing for retirement, budgeting, or simplifying systems—I can make minor adjustments without losing sight of my goals. If you’re considering establishing a personal theme for the year, I recommend starting with a concise statement: “My year of ___.”
Examples could be: “My year of organization,” “My year of financial awareness,” or “My year of simplification.” Each statement provides clear direction while allowing flexibility in how you pursue that goal.
Creating your vision board toolkit
Are you grappling with questions like, “Who am I now, and who do I want to become?” If so, crafting a vision board may unlock those answers. To assist in this journey while keeping flexibility intact, I have curated a selection of my favorite resources. Consider exploring my Women’s Wealth and Wellness Toolkit, which includes a vision board template, a money makeover checklist, and various financial planning tools.
