I visited Petra during a week-long journey through Jordan and chose to rest at the Mövenpick Resort Petra, which sits literally across the road from the archaeological site. Walking the Siq (the narrow gorge that opens onto the famous façade) still gives a strong sense of awe, but returning to a hotel that removes the late-night logistics changes the rhythm of a trip. The resort’s position, amenities and service made it straightforward to turn long days of exploring into restful evenings without extra transfers.
Beyond the location, the property blends regional style with modern comforts: rooms with handcrafted accents, a reliable minibar and complimentary in-room tea and coffee. I appreciated little practical touches after a dusty hike — showers with hot water, crisp linens and a footprint of local design that made the stay feel rooted in place rather than generic. Small rituals like the resort’s afternoon Chocolate Hour also added a light, memorable note to the stay.
Location and arrival
The resort’s most compelling feature is its proximity to the visitor entrance: roughly 50 metres to the Petra Visitor Centre and the museums that orient you for a day in the Rose City. There is no hotel airport shuttle, so plan transport in advance: book a private transfer or taxi from the airport, or rent a car and use the resort’s on-site parking. For travelers who prefer minimal driving, staying here removes the end-of-day commute — you can cross the road and collapse into a comfortable bed after hiking to the Monastery or exploring the Treasury.
Getting there and practical tips
If you drive, the roads into the region are scenic and the property offers secure parking. If you arrive by taxi or arranged transfer, confirm the pick-up point for early-morning returns since Petra has a set schedule for tourist flows. Pack a small towel and shoes that can be rinsed at the end of the day: the hotel provides a handy sterile foot bath and outdoor showers near the pool that make returning from dusty trails much more pleasant.
Facilities, rooms and wellness
Mövenpick balances restorative facilities with family-friendly features. The outdoor swimming pool is well-maintained and ideal for cooling off after a hot day; loungers and attentive pool service made downtime effortless. The Zara Spa focuses on regional treatments — Dead Sea salt scrubs, mineral wraps and a traditional hammam — and is a great way to soothe muscles after hikes. For those who want to keep moving, the hotel’s gym is well equipped, and boutique shops sell local Dead Sea products and crafts.
Rooms and suites
Guest rooms combine Middle Eastern touches with modern conveniences: free tea and coffee, a complimentary minibar and options that include private courtyards or hill-facing views. The King Suite is a good pick for travelers who want more living space and a private balcony overlooking Petra’s surrounding terrain. Whether you choose a standard room or a suite, the layout is designed for easy recovery after long days on foot.
Dining, nearby experiences and family features
The resort hosts several dining venues that suit casual and special-occasion meals. Highlights include a cosy tea room with views, a rooftop terrace with grilled dishes and mezze, a candlelit restaurant blending Jordanian and Mediterranean cuisine, and an elegant bar with old-world décor. For quick departures to the site there is also a casual lobby stop serving coffee, pastries and Mövenpick ice cream. Food options make early breakfasts and late dinners both convenient and varied.
Exploring Petra and the surrounding region
Staying at the resort puts you within easy reach of the major attractions: the Petra Archaeological Site, Little Petra, and the evening experience of Petra by Night with candlelit views of the Treasury. Day trips to Wadi Rum (for jeep safaris and stargazing) or the Dana Biosphere Reserve (for hiking) are simple additions to an itinerary. The area also offers cultural experiences like cooking classes and Bedouin hospitality that deepen the visit beyond the monuments.
Families will find kid-friendly touches: a games room with table tennis and a pool table, children’s menus, babysitting on request and, of course, the ever-popular Chocolate Hour. The resort also highlights sustainability efforts through staff education, local hiring, reduced waste and organic produce sourcing; Mövenpick properties are widely recognised for Green Globe certifications. Overall, for a short or mid-length stay in Petra the property is a comfortable, convenient base that simplifies logistics, offers restorative amenities and connects you directly to the site.
I was invited to experience a stay at Mövenpick Resort Petra. I was not required to publish a post and did not receive compensation; all impressions are my own.
