ADAM SILVER STATEMENT

Adam Silver issues a statement on Kobe Bryant’s death

Hours after Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven others tragically died in a helicopter crash, NBA commissioner Adam Silver released a statement. Silver took over as commissioner in February 2014, just over two seasons before Bryant retired.

Silver praised Bryant a lot after his retirement. He called Bryant ‘one of the greatest players in the history of our game’. This came after a storybook end to his career with the Los Angeles Lakers in which he lost 60 points in a winning performance against the Utah Jazz.

You can read Silver’s full statement on the tragic deaths of Bryant and his daughter below:

“The NBA family is shocked by the tragic death of Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna.

“For 20 seasons, Kobe has shown us what is possible when extraordinary talent is combined with an absolute devotion to victory. He was one of the most extraordinary players in our game history with legendary achievements: five NBA championships, one NBA MVP award, 18 NBA All-Star selections, and two Olympic gold medals.

But he will be most remembered for inspiring people around the world to pick up a basketball and compete to the best of their ability. He was generous with the wisdom he acquired and saw it as his mission to share it with future generations of players, taking special pleasure in passing down his love of the game to Gianna.

“We send our deepest condolences to his wife, Vanessa, and their family, the Lakers organization and the entire world of sport.”
