Evan Hubinger, a senior researcher at Anthropic recently stated that he believes there is a greater than 10% chance that AI could kill all humans within the next decade. This stark warning was echoed by Jacob Coxon, a former researcher at both Anthropic and OpenAI, who resigned citing concerns about the responsible development of AI.

The Race for AI Development
Coxon’s resignation letter highlighted the intense competition among AI labs to develop the most advanced systems. He claimed that neither Anthropic nor OpenAI were acting responsibly, describing their actions as gambling with our lives. This race to the top has raised concerns about the lack of coordination and regulation in the industry.
Anthropic’s latest model, Mythos 5.1 has been withheld from the UK’s AI Security Institute for pre-release testing, raising further questions about transparency and safety. The Cabinet Office confirmed that only a few US organizations have had access to the model, underscoring the need for international collaboration.
Calls for Regulation and Coordination
In response to these concerns, politicians and industry leaders are calling for greater regulation and coordination. Labour MP Darren Jones has written to world leaders, advocating for a multinational treaty to ensure the safe development of superintelligence. He emphasized the need for a safety-first approach to rapid technological advancement.
On the other side of the Atlantic, Senator Bernie Sanders has been vocal about the need for Congress to regulate the AI industry. He argued that the public must have a say in how AI develops, stating, We can’t allow a handful of greedy people to play God and determine the future of humanity.
The push for wider coordination was also highlighted by OpenAI’s chief scientist, Jakub Pachocki, who called for international coordination on future AI development to become a top priority for governments around the world.
The Divide Among Experts
While some experts warn of existential risks, others are more cautious. Dr. Andrew Rogoyski of the Surrey Institute for People-Centred AI suggested that advanced AI might turn out to be too expensive and not useful enough to continue in its current form. He argued that these systems are nowhere near as versatile as humans.
However, Prof. Stuart Russell of UC Berkeley warned of a Chornobyl-sized catastrophe and the possibility of humanity losing control irreversibly. He emphasized the need for careful consideration of the potential consequences of AI development.
