Four convicted in Istanbul hotel poisoning that claimed German family's lives

A Turkish court has delivered its verdict in a heartbreaking case that shook the nation. Four individuals have been convicted for their involvement in the tragic deaths of a Turkish-German family who fell victim to insecticide poisoning while staying at an Istanbul hotel. The case has raised serious concerns about hotel safety standards and pest control practices in Turkey.

The Bocek family, consisting of parents Servet and Cigdem, and their two young children, Kadir Muhammet and Masal, were on vacation in Istanbul when they fell ill in November 2026. Their stay at the Harbour Suites Old City hotel turned into a nightmare as they succumbed to the effects of phosphine gas a highly toxic substance used in pest control.

The tragic sequence of events

The family initially sought medical help for symptoms of nausea and vomiting but their condition rapidly deteriorated. Despite returning to the hotel, they were soon rushed back to the hospital by ambulance. Tragically, the children, Kadir Muhammet (6) and Masal (3), passed away on November 13. Their mother, Cigdem, succumbed to the poisoning on November 14, and their father, Servet, died on November 17.

The case initially suspected food poisoning but forensic investigations later revealed the presence of phosphine gas on towels, masks, and swab samples taken from the hotel. This revelation pointed to a pest control treatment gone horribly wrong.

The court’s verdict and sentencing

The Istanbul court found the hotel’s owner, Hakan Oglak, guilty of causing multiple deaths through negligence. He was sentenced to 13 years and four months in prison. The owners of DSS Pest Control, Zeki Kisi and his son Serkan Kisi, received the harshest sentences of 18 years each. Company employee Dogan Cagferoglu was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

All four convicted individuals are expected to appeal their sentences. Notably, two hotel reception employees who faced charges were acquitted.

The legal implications and broader context

The court convicted the defendants of causing death through conscious negligence a legal finding under Turkish law that applies when individuals knowingly disregard a significant risk that results in fatalities. Lawyers representing the victims’ family had argued for murder convictions while defense attorneys sought acquittals. The court ultimately rejected both requests, imposing lengthy prison sentences on four of the accused.

This tragic incident has sparked calls for stricter oversight of hotel safety standards in Turkey. It comes on the heels of another devastating event in January 2026, when a fire swept through a ski resort hotel in northwest Turkey, killing 78 people. These incidents highlight the urgent need for improved safety measures and regulations in the hospitality industry.

The Harbour Suites Old City hotel, where the tragic event occurred, is one of many low-cost hotels located near popular tourist attractions such as the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. The case serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking in seemingly safe environments and the importance of vigilance in ensuring public safety.
