Alabama WIC program expands eligibility

In related news, the Alabama Department of Public Health has released new guidelines for the WIC program, increasing the income eligibility limits. These updates, effective from June 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027, are based on the federal government’s annual updates to poverty guidelines.

Latrell Clifford Wood, a hunger policy advocate for Alabama Arise, emphasized the importance of these updates. “While we celebrate the wins like increased access to essential programs like this, we also reiterate the necessity,” Wood stated. The expanded eligibility criteria mean that more families in Alabama can now benefit from the WIC program’s resources.

The income eligibility limit for the WIC program is set at 185% of the federal poverty guidelines. For example, a household of four can now have an annual income of up to $61,050 and still qualify for assistance. This expansion is crucial in a state where issues like infant mortality and maternal mortality rates are significant concerns.

Clifford Wood highlighted the broader implications of supporting programs like WIC. “If we’re serious about a cradle to career or workforce development, we need to be investing in programs that work in tandem with that such as SNAP or school meals,” Wood said. These programs play a vital role in ensuring that families have access to nutritious food and essential resources.
